The interplay of dark metal and warm copper creates a sophisticated balance of materials, embodying the clean elegance and understated refinement characteristic of Scandinavian modern design. Both sculptural and functional, it serves as a striking centerpiece—whether hung above a dining table, in a hallway, or as a decorative accent in a modern interior.
Measuring 76 cm (29.9″) in height and 33 cm (12.9″) in diameter, it is presented in very good vintage condition, with only minor surface marks to the copper and some wax residue consistent with age and use. A rare find, and highly collectible, this pendant candlestick holder exemplifies Carl Thore’s ability to merge simplicity with timeless sophistication.
Sigurd “Carl Thore” Lindkvist (1916–2000) was a Swedish designer born in Åmål, Sweden. Before joining Granhaga Metallindustri AB in 1961 as Head of Sales and Lighting Design, he worked with the lighting firm Luko. It was during his time at Granhaga that he adopted the pseudonym Carl Thore—derived from his middle names—when presenting his designs to clients, wishing to keep his identity as the creator discreet. from that point onward, his works were marked “Carl Thore Design.”
Lindkvist remained with Granhaga until his retirement in 1981, leaving behind a legacy of sleek, modern Scandinavian lighting and accessories. While he is best known for his innovative lamps and chandeliers, he also created a small number of candlestick holders, which are considered especially rare and sought after today. These pieces capture the same refined modernist sensibility as his lighting designs, making them highly collectible examples of mid-century Scandinavian design.
