Ludwig Hesshaimer, Austrian draftsman, etcher, and illustrator, was originally a career officer. After nine years of military service, he became an art teacher at various military training institutions of the Habsburg Monarchy. At the outbreak of the First World War, he was in Sarajevo. Taking a short leave from military service, Hesshaimer studied at the Vienna Academy and trained in etching at the Graphic Teaching and Research Institute under Ludwig Michalek.

from February 1915, Hesshaimer was a member of the art group in the Imperial and Royal War Press Headquarters. He worked in Galicia and Bukovina, in 1916 in the Balkan Theater of War, and later as art group leader and liaison officer with Archduke Eugene’s Army Group in South Tyrol. Hesshaimer even rose to the position of deputy head of the art group in the War Press Headquarters. He was one of the first artists to exhibit his war drawings in Vienna.
