Pamono Large Louis XVI Cartel Wall Clock, Paris, 1770s> Clocks

Cartouche-shaped, large clock case made of fire-gilded bronze, which tapers in the lower part to a sculpted female mask with final stylized feather and leaf ornament. The upper part of the case houses the large round enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and richly decorated hour and minute hands, signed “Juhel à Paris”. Above the mascaron front open pendulum case. The clock case is crowned by a classicistic handle vase on a segmental arch gable surrounded by four pine cones, from which a drapery with accompanying acanthus leaf ornaments falls down to the side of the dial. Movement with half and hour strike on bell, thread suspension, crank key. The cartel clock shows excellent chasing as well as excellent, vivid fire gilding with matte and polished sections. A Cartel clock of the same model is in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, other examples of this model are part of the collection of Waddesdon Manor and the Victoria&Albert Museum London.
