Sculpture signed Contenot on the base (Henri Daniel).
Joan was a young French woman of peasant origin; in 1429, she claimed to have received a visit from saints, who entrusted her with the mission of freeing France from English occupation.
She managed to meet the king of the time, Charles VII, and led the French troops to victory (Siege of Orléans, coronation of the king in Reims).
Captured by the Burgundians in 1430, she was sold to the English, and following a trial for heresy, she was burned at the stake.
Joan of Arc is one of the patron saints of France, a world-renowned figure whose story has inspired numerous works (films and literature, but especially sculpture and painting).
Good overall condition, with some wear to the patina (rubbing of the sword, etc.), and signs of wear from use (missing tip of the sword, bent spurs, fleur-de-lis stem in need of restoration).
