A protean and prolific French painter, Lucien Courtaud (1904-1977), oscillates from engraving, to theater decoration, to opera, including the exercise of Aubusson tapestry cardboard maker (listed in the cultural heritage of the UNESCO). After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Nîmes, he experimented with the academies of Paris.

Parisian life aroused his curiosity towards the primitive works of the Louvre, but also those of Max Ernst, Paul Klee… Then, the artist interfered directly in the excitement of artistic life by making friends with the notable figures of the Parisian cultural scene Pablo Picasso, Jean Paul Sartre, Jacques Prévert, Paul Eluard, Boris Vian, Jean Paulhan…

His approach focuses on probing the pangs of the soul, through figurative characters tending towards abstraction, drawings, but also via theatrical decorations (Medea by Cherubini, performed by Maria Callas at the May musical in Florence in 1953) . His paintings freeze the torments of human beings, at the crossroads of surrealism and poetry. His different themes crystallize through his invention of “Eroticomagia”, a painting charged with the most buried emotions and desires. This painting is reflected in his theater decorations, that of the Satin Shoe by Paul Claudel for the Comédie Française in 1943 or the Jeux de Printemps at the Opéra-comique in 1948.

The ingenuity of Lucien Courtaud manages to shed light on the obscurity of a poetic collection “Une saison en enfer” by Arthur Rimbaud (under the company Bibliophiles de France and Overseas Book Lovers in New York). This opus characterizes the themes of Lucien Courtaud: torment, dizziness of creation, awareness of finitude. Poetry is Coutaud’s shield for his obsessive anxieties.
