David Haviland, an American merchant, established a pottery and porcelain import business in 1838 in New York.
In 1842 he moved to Limoges, the porcelain capital of the world, to establish his manufactory. Soon internationally recognized for his innovative eye he won several awards such as the gold medal at the 1853 New York Exposition or the silver medal at the 1855 Paris Universal Exposition. Beginning in 1864, the Haviland factory was the most important producer of French porcelain, and many eminent people became its customers: the Empress Eugénie wife of Napoleon III, French President Jacques Chirac, Prince Rainier of Monaco, as well as American Presidents Lincoln and Roosevelt.
Some of the most skilled artists who collaborated on the manufacture’s greatness include Bracquemond, Dammouse, Suzanne Lalique, Gauguin, Dufy, Kandinsky and Dali.
